Premier League title race tightens as Manchester City chase Arsenal and Liverpool revive top four hopes

by nikita.m

The Premier League title race is beginning to feel like one long exhale. Just when it seems one side might pull away, another lands a statement win.

On a rain soaked night in Manchester, Manchester City did exactly that.

Only days after their dramatic comeback victory over Liverpool, City returned home with momentum firmly on their side. Against Fulham, they wasted no time reminding everyone why they remain one of the most relentless sides in Europe.

Three goals in 15 first-half minutes effectively ended the contest before the tea had gone cold.

Antoine Semenyo continued his dream start to life at the Etihad. The January arrival from Bournemouth scored again, making it five goals since his move, before turning provider for Nico O’Reilly, who delicately chipped home City’s second. Erling Haaland then added a third, finally ending his wait for a Premier League goal from open play after nearly two months.

For Haaland, it was less about fireworks and more about rhythm. Pep Guardiola even afforded him a second-half rest, a sign that City are thinking long term as the season edges into its decisive stretch.

The result moves City within three points of Arsenal. The Gunners can restore a six-point cushion with victory at Brentford, but the sense of calm that once surrounded their title charge has started to shift. With memories of past near-misses still fresh, the pressure is very real.

It is worth remembering that Arsenal are chasing a first league title in 22 years. That history hangs quietly in the background of every result.

Liverpool breathe again after Sunderland test

While the spotlight often follows the title race, the battle for Champions League spots is proving just as gripping.

Liverpool travelled to the Stadium of Light knowing they could not afford another slip. Sunderland had not lost at home all season, turning their ground into something of a fortress. That record is now gone.

A single moment decided it. Virgil van Dijk rose highest to meet a Mohamed Salah corner early in the second half, powering in the only goal of the match.

It was only Liverpool’s second league win of 2026, but it may prove significant. Arne Slot admitted before kick-off that failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League would place his position under scrutiny, even after winning the title in his debut campaign.

The victory keeps Liverpool sixth but brings them within two points of fifth-placed Chelsea and three behind Manchester United in fourth. With English clubs performing strongly in Europe this season, a top-five finish could be enough for Champions League football.

Sometimes, seasons turn on small margins. A header from a corner might just be one of them.

Burnley fight back and Villa edge closer

Elsewhere, the drama did not stop.

Burnley snapped a 16-game winless run in stunning fashion at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace looked in control after new signing Jorgen Strand Larsen scored twice inside 33 minutes on his home debut following a £48 million move from Wolves.

Then came chaos.

Three goals in the final five minutes of the first half flipped the script. Hannibal Mejbri and Jaidon Anthony struck to level matters before Jefferson Lerma’s own goal completed a remarkable turnaround.

For Burnley, it was a long-awaited release. For Palace, it was a harsh reminder that momentum can vanish in seconds.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, strengthened their grip on third place with a narrow 1-0 win over Brighton. A late own goal from Jack Hinshelwood proved decisive, maintaining Villa’s eight-point cushion over Liverpool.

The match also carried a slice of history. Brighton’s James Milner made his 653rd Premier League appearance, equalling the all-time record held by Gareth Barry. It was a reminder of the league’s longevity and evolving eras, even as new narratives unfold around him.

A season balanced on fine lines

As February football rolls on, the margins grow tighter.

City are charging. Arsenal are being hunted. Liverpool are clinging to hope. Villa are quietly building something strong.

The Premier League has always thrived on tension, and this season feels no different. Every header, every own goal, every five-minute burst of chaos carries weight.
