South Africans can now reinstate lost citizenship online in just one hour
For South Africans who once lost their citizenship after acquiring another nationality, a digital lifeline has arrived. The Department of Home Affairs has unveiled the second and final phase of the Citizenship Reinstatement Portal, enabling citizens to restore their status online in as little as one hour.
Announced by Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber, this launch comes after years of frustration for individuals caught in legal limbo, following the Constitutional Court ruling in Democratic Alliance v Minister of Home Affairs on May 6, 2025. That judgment declared Section 6(1)(a) of the Citizenship Act unconstitutional, meaning thousands of South Africans automatically stripped of their citizenship after acquiring another nationality can now regain it.
“This online tool enables South Africans who have unconstitutionally lost their citizenship to conveniently reinstate it without filling in a single form or standing in any queues,” Schreiber said.

From weeks to an hour: the new era of digital citizenship
Before the portal, reinstatement processes were lengthy and paper-heavy, often taking six to eight weeks. Phase two transforms this, introducing real-time automated processing. Once the application is approved, the individual’s status is instantly updated on the Population Register and they receive immediate notification, allowing them to apply for a South African passport or smart ID without delay.
The first phase of the portal, launched in late November 2025, already showed strong uptake: 12,008 people checked their status, with 1,088 successfully reinstating their citizenship within 11 weeks. Phase two accelerates that process dramatically, offering citizens a chance to restore their rights almost instantly, all from the comfort of their homes.

Biometric technology at the core
Central to the portal’s success is its biometric verification system. Users can securely take a selfie and scan their passport to confirm their identity without any human intervention or paperwork. If verification cannot be completed automatically, the application is escalated to a specialist for careful review, ensuring accuracy and fairness.
Schreiber emphasised the portal’s broader significance:
“Citizenship Reinstatement Portal 2.0 represents a step change in how constitutional rights are implemented through modern digital public infrastructure. We are leapfrogging from paperwork, queues, and long delays to secure, automated, biometric-enabled services that restore dignity and certainty.”
Restoring dignity and trust
Beyond convenience, the portal restores legal and personal dignity. Many affected citizens had felt marginalised or uncertain about their status for years. This system now allows them to re-establish their rights quickly and securely.
“The enormous success of this portal, which has already seen thousands of users successfully verify their status from the comfort of their own homes using nothing but their smart device, provides a glimpse of the future we are building as we deliver Home Affairs @ home,” Schreiber said.
The portal is also a building block for South Africa’s Digital Identity system, aiming to provide a fully online, secure, and accessible framework for all identity-related services.
