Man City fought back hard to end the Anfield hoodoo and reel in Arsenal in an epic battle for the Premier League Title.
Erling Haaland’s stoppage-time penalty earned City their dramatic 2-1 win against Liverpool. The Manchester City team were heading for another defeat at Anfield with just six minutes to go before Bernardo Silva cancelled out the 1-0 lead Liverpool had.
Haaland put Man City in front from the spot before the team had another goal ruled out after a foul play from Liverpool’s Szoboszlai, who was sent off the pitch after a VAR review. Szoboslai went from hero to zero very quickly after firing a missile past Gigi Donnaruma and shortly after was sent off for serious foul play.
Liverpool supporters could hardly believe what they were seeing, and silence quickly followed in the stands.
This victory over Liverpool is City’s first away in front of a crowd since 2003 and puts some pressure on Arsenal’s quest for a title, as they are leading the Premier League standings.
Defeating Liverpool delivers yet another blow to Liverpool’s hopes of Champions League football next season. The defending champions are now in sixth and four points adrift of the top five, diminishing their chances.
Throughout the season, second-half slumps have been a consistent feature of City’s, and last night was no different. They again faded in the second period until the late flurry of goals saved City’s title challenge chances.
Gianluigi Donnarumma managed to save several goals from the Liverpool team. The Man City goalkeeper did incredibly well in deflecting shots on target.
Pep Guardiola’s men needed this dramatic win to be considered contenders for this season’s title. Manchester City is currently in second position in the Premier League with 50 points, just 6 points behind Arsenal.
