Nota Baloyi’s ‘wannabe Nandi’ jab at Zozibini Tunzi sparks online backlash

When commentary turns personal

South African media personality Nota Baloyi has once again landed at the centre of controversy, this time after directing sharp criticism at former Miss South Africa and Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi. His comment, in which he described her as a “wannabe Nandi,” quickly travelled beyond its original platform and into the wider public conversation.

The remark was widely interpreted as a comparison to Nandi Madida, a respected television host, singer, and businesswoman who has built a long, multi-layered career in the entertainment industry. For many South Africans, the comparison felt unnecessary and dismissive, especially given Tunzi’s own global achievements.

Why this struck a nerve

Zozibini Tunzi is not just another public figure. Since winning Miss Universe in 2019, she has become a symbol of modern South African excellence, admired for her advocacy, intelligence, and grounded public presence. Her rise came at a time when conversations around representation, natural beauty, and African identity were gaining momentum locally and internationally.

Against that backdrop, Baloyi’s words landed heavily. On social media, many users questioned why a woman with Tunzi’s résumé would be reduced to a comparison at all. Others pointed out that Nandi Madida herself has never positioned her success in competition with anyone else, making the remark feel even more misplaced.

Online reaction and public mood

The response online was swift and largely critical. Twitter and Instagram users accused Baloyi of undermining women’s achievements and reigniting tired narratives that pit successful South African women against one another. Some defended his right to speak freely, but even those voices acknowledged that the tone felt deliberately provocative.

A recurring sentiment was fatigue. Many commenters expressed frustration with how often women in the public eye are scrutinised more harshly than their male counterparts, particularly by outspoken critics who benefit from controversy.

Wannabe Nandi, she got married in a weave though so she could look like the rest of the whores!😔 https://t.co/fpVPQgUIl7

A pattern that feels familiar

This is not the first time Nota Baloyi’s commentary has sparked debate. He has built a reputation for unfiltered opinions that blur the line between critique and personal attack. Supporters argue that he says what others are afraid to. Critics say his approach relies too heavily on shock value.

What made this moment different was the target. Tunzi has largely stayed away from public feuds, choosing instead to focus on brand partnerships, advocacy work, and selective media appearances. Her silence following the comment only strengthened public sympathy in her favour.

The bigger conversation it opens

Beyond the individuals involved, the incident highlights a broader issue within South African celebrity culture. Public criticism often masquerades as honesty, while respect and context are treated as optional. The reaction to Baloyi’s comment suggests that audiences are becoming less tolerant of commentary that feels needlessly personal, especially when directed at figures who have earned widespread respect.

For many readers, the takeaway is simple. South Africa has space for more than one successful woman, and comparison does little to add meaning to the conversation.
