Mamelodi Sundowns may soon see two key figures return to action, with coach Miguel Cardoso offering an encouraging outlook on the recoveries of Captain Ronwen Williams and new signing Monnapule Saleng. The update comes as the Brazilians prepare for their Nedbank Cup last 32 clash against Gomora United.
A week of questions around Williams
Williams’ absence has not gone unnoticed. The Bafana Bafana captain has missed two important fixtures, including Sundowns’ disappointing CAF Champions League loss away to Al Hilal. With his leadership and calm presence often setting the tone for the team, fans have been eager for clarity.
Cardoso explained that the goalkeeper’s setback is not as serious as initially feared.
He shared that Williams is dealing with what he described as a syndrome rather than a muscle strain. It is an issue that requires management but not a long spell on the sidelines. Cardoso added that the technical team is working to see if he can return as early as the coming weekend.
For Sundowns, the timing could not be more crucial. Williams’ absence has forced tactical adjustments, something even Al Hilal’s coach acknowledged when preparing for the match. His return would restore both stability and familiarity in the last line of defence.
Saleng’s return timeline becomes clearer
While Williams works towards a possible weekend return, winger Monnapule Saleng is on a slightly longer recovery path. The former Orlando Pirates star joined Sundowns last month but has yet to make his debut due to injury.
Cardoso revealed that early estimates of a two month layoff were shared intentionally to ease expectations and reduce pressure on the player. Fortunately, Saleng is progressing faster than anticipated.
The next step will be ensuring he feels physically ready and fits comfortably into Sundowns’ tactical demands. The club wants him fully confident before he steps onto the pitch, rather than rushing him back for short term gain.
Understanding the bigger picture
Cardoso also pointed out that Saleng’s situation is different from that of teammate Khulumani Ndamane, who returned from AFCON in peak condition. Brayan León also arrived fit after a full preseason, making their integration smoother.
Saleng, however, needs space to recover properly and learn the rhythm of Cardoso’s system. Sundowns supporters can expect him back in a few weeks, provided his fitness continues to trend positively.
A cautiously optimistic outlook
For a team competing on multiple fronts, Sundowns will welcome any positive news on the injury front. Williams is edging closer to full fitness and may be back within days. Saleng is not far behind and is on track to play his first minutes for the club soon.
With the Nedbank Cup underway and Champions League pressure rising, the Brazilians will hope these returns come just in time.
