World Cup trophy arrives in South Africa as Ramaphosa and McKenzie welcome global spotlight

by nikita.m

South Africa is gearing up for a rare moment in the global football spotlight as the FIFA World Cup trophy touches down in Johannesburg on Friday. The iconic goldware is arriving from Kigali as part of Coca-Cola’s international Trophy Tour, a global build-up to the 2026 World Cup hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States.

For local fans, the tour brings a sense of renewed pride. The national team has fought hard to qualify for the tournament, and the arrival of the trophy makes the dream feel a little closer to home.

Ramaphosa and McKenzie to receive the trophy

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed that he and President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially welcome the trophy in Johannesburg. Their appearance is expected to draw significant attention, not only for the symbolic weight of the event but also for the broader conversations around South Africa’s participation.

McKenzie dismissed recent public calls for a World Cup boycott, describing the criticism as misplaced. He was clear that the country will be fully represented on the world stage, encouraging South Africans to support the team’s journey.

A national celebration across two cities

The trophy’s arrival kicks off a weekend of high-profile events. Johannesburg will host the first leg, including a gala dinner at the Sandton Convention Centre featuring dignitaries, former Bafana Bafana players and invited guests. While organisers have not confirmed the full guest list, several international football legends are expected to be part of the celebrations.

From there, the festivities move to Cape Town, where fans will have the chance to see the trophy in person and take photographs. As per FIFA protocol, only President Ramaphosa will be allowed to touch the prize.

Looking ahead to 2026

The excitement comes at a time when Bafana Bafana are finalising preparations for a challenging Group A draw that places them alongside hosts Mexico, South Korea and the winner of the upcoming European play-off.

For many South Africans, the Trophy Tour serves as a reminder of the country’s enduring football passion. The last time the trophy drew such national attention was during the build-up to the 2010 World Cup, and that sense of unity and anticipation seems to be stirring once again.

With the countdown to 2026 accelerating, the trophy’s arrival offers a welcome boost. It signals that South Africa is not just participating, but stepping confidently into the global arena.
