Proteas hammer Windies to seize early series control

South Africa could hardly have asked for a better start to their T20 International series against the West Indies after powering to a commanding nine-wicket victory at Boland Park in Paarl on Tuesday night, Cape Town Etc reports.

With both sides sharpening their weapons ahead of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the opening clash offered a clear early statement from the hosts.

Winning the toss, the Proteas chose to bowl first, a call that raised eyebrows at the time but soon proved inspired as the West Indies struggled to build sustained momentum. Although the visitors posted a respectable 173/7, their innings never fully took off against a measured and disciplined South African attack.

Shimron Hetmyer was the standout for the Windies, playing an aggressive knock of 48 from 32 balls that included three huge sixes, one clearing the boundary by more than 100 metres. Rovman Powell provided late resistance with an unbeaten 25, while Brandon King added urgency at the top with a rapid 27 off just 17 deliveries. Beyond those contributions, however, the batting lineup failed to capitalise, regularly losing wickets at key moments.

George Linde led the charge with the ball for South Africa, delivering a match-defining spell of 3/25 in his four overs. Corbin Bosch chipped in with 2/35, while Keshav Maharaj’s experience showed as he claimed 2/44 to keep the pressure firmly on the visitors throughout the innings.

The chase was turned into a formality thanks to a dominant opening stand between teenage prospect Lhuan-Dre Pretorius and skipper Aiden Markram. The pair raced to 81 in under eight overs, immediately swinging the contest South Africa’s way. Pretorius impressed once again with a fluent 44 off 28 balls before falling to Roston Chase, while Markram took full control from there.

Batting with authority and calm, Markram produced a polished unbeaten 86 from 47 deliveries, finding the boundary nine times and clearing it on three occasions. Ryan Rickelton, batting at number three after a late World Cup squad call-up, added further assurance with a composed 40 not out as the hosts cruised to victory with more than two overs to spare.

Named man of the match, Linde pointed to mental toughness and collective focus as key ingredients in the win, particularly with World Cup pressure on the horizon. Attention now shifts to Centurion, where the second T20 International is scheduled to get underway at SuperSport Park at 6 pm today.
