Bounou the hero as Morocco hold their nerve to knock Nigeria out of AFCON on penalties

by nikita.m

Rabat holds its breath as history beckons

There are nights when football feels heavier than ninety minutes, when the silence before a penalty kick carries the weight of decades. That was the mood in Rabat on Wednesday as Morocco finally stepped closer to ending a half-century wait for continental glory, edging Nigeria 4-2 on penalties after a tense, goalless Africa Cup of Nations semi-final.

A packed Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah lived every moment with the Atlas Lions, who are now one win away from their first Africa Cup of Nations title since 1976.

At the centre of it all stood goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, calm, unflinching, and ultimately decisive.

A semi final played on a knife edge

From the opening whistle, it was clear neither side would give much away. Morocco came out with early intent, pressing high and forcing errors, while Nigeria absorbed the pressure with discipline and patience.

The hosts threatened first through Brahim Diaz, whose movement unsettled the Nigerian defence, and Achraf Hakimi, whose deliveries constantly asked questions. Nigeria’s response was measured, with Ademola Lookman probing from range and Victor Osimhen battling for space against a well-organised Moroccan backline.

Both goalkeepers grew into the night. Stanley Nwabali made several important stops, while Bounou matched him at the other end, ensuring the deadlock held firm through regulation time.

Pressure, fatigue, and no room for mistakes

As the second half wore on, Morocco began to push Nigeria deeper. Chances came and went, including late efforts from Abde Ezzalzouli, but the Super Eagles held their line. Extra time followed a similar pattern. Legs were heavy, risks were limited, and both benches seemed to sense that penalties were inevitable.

For African football fans, it felt like a moment where fine margins and mental strength would decide everything.

Bounou delivers when it matters most

The shootout swung with every kick. Nigeria briefly seized momentum when Nwabali made a save, but it lasted only seconds. Bounou responded immediately, reading the next effort and restoring balance.

When he later denied another Nigerian penalty, the stadium erupted. Phones were already in the air across Rabat, and social media lit up with Moroccan fans hailing him as a national hero before the contest was even over.

It was left to Youssef En-Nesyri to apply the finishing touch. His final kick was confident and precise, sending Morocco into their first AFCON final in 21 years and unleashing scenes of pure release in the stands.

What it means for Morocco and Nigeria

For Morocco, this win feels bigger than a semi-final. As tournament hosts, expectation has followed them everywhere, shaped by their recent World Cup heroics and a generation many believe is capable of rewriting history. Now, with Senegal waiting in the final, that belief feels tangible.

Across North and West Africa, fans reacted instantly. Moroccan supporters spoke of destiny and patience finally being rewarded, while Nigerian fans praised the team’s resilience despite the heartbreak. Many Super Eagles supporters highlighted the performance of the defence and Nwabali’s composure, even as they processed another narrow exit.

Nigeria will now turn their focus to the third-place play-off against Egypt in Casablanca, a chance to finish the tournament with pride after falling just short of another final.

One step from ending a 50-year wait

Sunday’s final is no longer just a match for Morocco. It is a chance to close a chapter that has been open since 1976, in front of a nation that has dared to dream all tournament long. They will now face 2021 champions Senegal in what it guaranteed to be a pure show stopper.

On a night when nerves ruled and goals were absent, Morocco found the one thing that mattered most. Composure when it counted.
