Arsenal let opportunity slip on a stormy north London night
Everything about the evening felt set up for a statement. The Emirates Stadium was buzzing, Manchester City had stumbled again, and Arsenal knew a win would tighten their grip on a Premier League title that has eluded them for more than two decades.
Instead, they were left with a 0-0 draw against last year’s title rivals Liverpool, a result that keeps them comfortably top but also carries a quiet sense of frustration.
Arsenal remain six points clear, but this was the kind of night where champions usually twist the knife.
Weather drains the life out of a big occasion
Long before half-time, Storm Goretti had become an uninvited headline act. Torrential rain and swirling winds turned control into a challenge and flair into a risk.
From the stands and across social media, supporters joked about the conditions being better suited to water polo than title-chasing football. The spectacle never truly lifted, and what should have been a statement match flattened into a battle of patience and survival.
Liverpool threaten without finishing the job
Despite being penned back early, Liverpool came closest to scoring before the break.
A sloppy backpass from William Saliba left David Raya stranded, and Conor Bradley’s audacious lob clipped the underside of the crossbar. It was a heart-in-mouth moment that briefly silenced the home crowd.
The second half saw Liverpool grow in confidence and control possession, but their lack of attacking firepower told. With Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations and both Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike sidelined through injury, the final pass and decisive touch were missing.
Jeremie Frimpong’s pace caused occasional problems, yet Arsenal were rarely stretched beyond that.
Arsenal attack falls quiet at the worst time
This was a rare off-night in front of goal for Arsenal at home. For the first time this season at the Emirates, they failed to score.
Viktor Gyokeres’ struggles continued, his open-play drought stretching to 10 games before Mikel Arteta withdrew him. The response was bold on paper, with Gabriel Jesus, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Martinelli all sent on.
The impact, though, was minimal. Arsenal did not manage a shot on target in the second half until stoppage time, when efforts from Jesus and Martinelli were comfortably handled by Alisson Becker.
Tensions rose towards the end of the game, when Liverpool’s Connor Bradley landed awkwardly on his knee and moved over onto the sideline to receive medical treatment, but moved himself onto the field again. Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli then threw the ball at Bradley and pushed him onto the sidelines, further adding onto the pain that Bradley was experiencing.
His initial claim was the Bradley was timewasting, and his actions immediately enraged the Liverpool players who went over to confront him. He was then shown a yellow card, while Bradley was carried off on a stretcher indicating that the nature of the injury could be serious.
After facing some serious backlash from football pundits like Gary Neville, Daniel Sturridge and Roy Keane, as well as on social media calling the act classless, Martinelli came out and issues a public apology for his actions. The Brazilian claimed that he did not realise the seriousness of Bradley’s injury and was caught up with the emotions of the moment.
What the draw means for the run-in
The point keeps Arsenal firmly in control of the title race, but it also feels like a warning light rather than a celebration. Games like this tend to linger in the memory when margins tighten later in the season.
For Liverpool, the result extends an impressive unbeaten run to 10 matches and strengthens their hold on a Champions League place, moving them three points clear of Newcastle and Manchester United.
For Arsenal, the table still looks healthy. The question now is whether missed opportunities like this remain footnotes, or become chapters in a story they are desperate to finally finish.
