There was relief more than celebration in the Egyptian camp on Monday night as the seven-time African champions finally shook off a stubborn Benin side to book their place in the AFCON quarter-finals.
At the Stade Adrar in Agadir, Egypt were pushed to their limits before securing a 3–1 extra-time win that reflected both their experience and the growing competitiveness of this tournament. It was not pretty. It was not easy. But it was enough.
For Benin, the night ended in heartbreak, but also pride. Their AFCON journey may be over, yet it will be remembered as one of genuine progress.
A Test Of Patience For The Pharaohs
Egypt arrived with pedigree and pressure. Benin arrived with belief.
From the opening minutes, the Pharaohs controlled possession and territory, probing patiently for gaps. Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush linked up early, forcing Benin goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou into sharp work, while at the other end Junior Olaitan reminded Egypt that complacency would be punished.
Despite Egypt’s dominance, goals refused to come. Chances were blocked, cleared, or smothered, and the match developed into a familiar AFCON storyline where reputation alone counts for nothing.
Injuries on both sides disrupted rhythm, adding to a tense, stop-start feel that suited Benin far more than their illustrious opponents.
The Moment That Finally Opened The Game
The breakthrough, when it arrived, was pure quality.
Just past the hour mark, Mohamed Hany pulled the ball back from the byline and Marwan Attia struck first time from the edge of the area, sending a powerful finish into the top corner. It felt like the decisive blow.
It was not.
Benin refused to fade and were rewarded late on when Jodel Dossou reacted quickest after a defensive lapse to level the match. In the stands and on social media, neutral fans were firmly behind the underdogs as extra time loomed.
Extra Time Brings Experience To The Fore
Extra time told a familiar AFCON tale. When legs tired and spaces opened, Egypt’s tournament know-how came to the fore.
Attia once again played provider, this time for Yasser Ibrahim, whose looping header restored Egypt’s lead. Benin pushed forward bravely but could not convert their set-piece chances.
Then came the final twist.
With Benin chasing an equaliser, Salah burst clear on the counter and finished from distance with the goalkeeper stranded. It was his 10th goal at AFCON finals, a milestone that places him among Egypt’s greats.
Salah Keeps Expectations In Check
Despite his match-winning impact, Salah was quick to temper expectations afterwards.
He described Egypt as fighters rather than favourites, pointing to a young squad and the fine margins that define AFCON football. His comments resonated with fans back home, many of whom praised Benin’s organisation while acknowledging Egypt’s resilience.
On Egyptian social media, the mood was mixed. Relief dominated, but so did calls for sharper finishing and calmer game management as the knockout rounds intensify.
Benin Exit With Heads Held High
For Benin, this defeat does not erase what they achieved. They leave the tournament having ended a long AFCON winless run and claimed a historic open-play victory earlier in the competition.
Their disciplined performance against one of Africa’s giants earned widespread respect, including from Egyptian supporters who acknowledged just how hard this match was.
What Comes Next
Egypt now stay in Agadir for a quarter-final clash against either Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso, a step up in intensity and expectation.
They may not see themselves as favourites, but as history shows, Egypt at AFCON rarely disappear quietly. This was a reminder that titles are not won on reputation, but on nights like this, when survival matters more than style.
