J-Smash Reflects on a Year Without His Mother
South African DJ and producer J-Smash, born Uhone Luvhengo, took to Instagram this week to mark one year since the passing of his mother with a deeply personal tribute. The post resonated with fans across social media, with many praising his openness about grief, resilience, and the enduring bond between parent and child.
“A year ago, my life changed forever,” he began. “I remember standing in the shower when my nose started bleeding non-stop… Something in me knew something was wrong before the phone rang. A few hours later, the call came … and just like that, you were gone.”
The DJ candidly described the initial shock and emptiness that followed. “I didn’t accept it then. I just survived. The pain this day brings is beyond words. December has never been the same, and this past year has been one long battle.”

Carrying His Mother’s Strength
While grief dominates the anniversary, J-Smash focused on the resilience and determination his mother embodied. “Now, a year later, I keep asking myself how she managed to do everything she did … I watched her stay strong even when she was weak. I watched her fight until her last days, and that strength still lives in me.”
He shared the small, haunting ways her presence still lingers: “Sometimes I hear her voice calling my name, sometimes her laughter. For a moment, it feels like she’s still here. Then reality settles in, and my heart has to relearn the truth all over again.”
Lessons That Live On
J-Smash reflected on the lessons his mother instilled in him—lessons of courage, purpose, and care. “Being here a year later feels like being a warrior who never asked for war, but I understand now that I was being prepared all along. As her son, I was raised to stand like a king, to protect those I love, and to move through life with purpose and strength. I carry her lessons and her spirit into everything I do.”
He concluded the tribute with a heartfelt message: “This day brings so much pain. Mom, I love you more than words could ever hold.”
A Reminder of Support
Fans and followers praised J-Smash’s vulnerability, with many sharing their own experiences of loss and resilience in the comments. The tribute also serves as a reminder that grieving is a process, and that support is available.
