Hugo Broos Slams Mbokazi’s MLS Switch As South Africans Weigh In

by nikita.m

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has never been the type to sugarcoat his feelings, and this week he delivered one of his sharpest outbursts yet. His target was 20-year-old defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, whose move from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire has sparked fiery debate across South African football circles.

The youngster, widely seen as one of the country’s brightest defensive prospects, reported late to national team camp. That alone angered Broos, who said the rising star was already “acting like a celebrity”. But what truly set the coach off was Mbokazi’s upcoming move to Major League Soccer.

Broos Questions Move To The USA

Speaking to the media in Pretoria, Broos held nothing back. In his view, the move is mistimed, miscalculated, and potentially harmful to the player’s development.

“What is he going to do in Chicago?” Broos asked bluntly. He went further, suggesting that Mbokazi might not even play for the Fire’s senior team, but rather for their MLS Next Pro side. “That is even worse,” he added.

For South Africans who follow MLS only casually, Chicago Fire isn’t exactly synonymous with success. Locally, fans often compare international moves to proven stepping stones like Belgium, the Netherlands or Portugal. Broos’s comments tapped directly into that sentiment, echoing concerns many supporters have voiced online.

The Agent In The Crossfire

Broos didn’t stop at the player. He directed his frustration at Mbokazi’s agent, questioning her motives and understanding of the sport.

“Like many agents, it is about how much can I get,” he said. The coach argued that with AFCON approaching and World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, Mbokazi could have secured a move to a more competitive environment that would better serve his national team ambitions.

In a year where South Africa is pushing hard for international resurgence, Broos’s irritation seems rooted in fear of losing yet another promising player to a league he believes offers limited long-term growth.

Public Reaction: Mixed, Noisy And Very South African

Social media lit up quickly after Broos’s comments. Some fans applauded his straight talk, saying local players often rush overseas without considering the consequences. Others pushed back, arguing that MLS is improving, offers financial stability, and gives young players a chance to grow away from the intense scrutiny of the PSL.

Chicago Fire supporters and South African expats in the US also chimed in, pointing out that the club has strong facilities and a passionate fanbase, even if they aren’t title contenders.

Still, the dominant question remains: will Mbokazi thrive in a foreign city thousands of kilometres away from home, or struggle in a league that many local fans still misunderstand?

Background: A Rising Star At A Crossroads

Mbokazi is still under contract with Orlando Pirates until the end of 2025, meaning the move is looming rather than immediate. Over the past year, he has emerged as one of the country’s most promising young defenders, earning praise for his composure and athleticism.

That rise has placed him under the kind of spotlight that Broos fears may become blinding. With AFCON preparations underway and the World Cup qualification cycle intensifying, the timing of his transition to the US becomes a major talking point not only for the coach, but for supporters who want Bafana to field their strongest possible squad.

What Comes Next For Mbokazi

With Broos publicly questioning his professionalism and career choice, the defender now enters a pressure-filled chapter. The next few months will demand maturity, consistency and a clear response on the pitch.

Regardless of where he ultimately plays, one thing is certain: South Africans will be watching closely, debating loudly, and hoping this young star’s journey doesn’t dim before it fully shines.
