Step Into Christmas with Rassie Erasmus and a Cape Town Sunrise
Christmas morning in Cape Town is set to sparkle a little brighter this year, thanks to South African rugby coach Johan “Rassie” Erasmus. Following the huge success of last year’s festive walk, Erasmus is inviting fans and locals to join him for another early morning stroll along the Blouberg coastline.
Posting on social media, Erasmus wrote: “If you guys in Blouberg are keen to do this again on Christmas morning?” The response was instant and enthusiastic, prompting him to confirm the plan: “Okay, lekka looks like we have a lekka size group for a walk!! We’ll do it then on Thursday, 25 Dec at 06h00 in front of Doodles. It’s a fast walk (not run) – 3km out and 3 back! = GI Dezember.”
Fans Show Excitement and Suggest Giving Back
The announcement sparked a flurry of comments from fans, with some joking about fitting the walk around Christmas lunch and others reminiscing about last year’s event. One user even suggested adding a charitable twist: “How about everybody brings a shopping bag full of old clothes, blankets, shoes and donate to those in need?”
This idea taps into a broader trend of combining community fitness with acts of giving, a theme that resonates with Erasmus’ reputation both on and off the rugby field.

From Personal Stroll to Community Tradition
The first Christmas walk took place in December 2024, starting as a simple stroll and quickly growing into a community gathering. Erasmus shared photos and videos from last year, including a candid shot of his bulldog, Frank, reminding him to stay active. Hundreds of fans joined, creating a moment of connection and festive joy.
Participants shared their own photos and videos, turning the event into a viral social media moment and highlighting the importance of togetherness. For many, it was more than just a morning walk—it became a space for connection, reflection, and shared holiday cheer.
Beyond Rugby: Leadership and Community Spirit
Erasmus’ involvement reflects qualities often highlighted throughout his career: leadership, mentorship, and a dedication to nation-building. Beyond coaching, he has used his platform to engage South Africans in meaningful ways, earning accolades including an honorary doctorate for his contribution to sport and community.
This Christmas, fans once again have the chance to join Erasmus, walk the six-kilometre stretch of Blouberg Beach, and be part of a growing tradition that combines fitness, festive spirit, and a sense of community.
Whether you’re a rugby fan, a fitness enthusiast, or someone looking for a unique way to start Christmas Day, the walk promises sunrise views, good vibes, and a moment to connect with fellow South Africans.
