Orlando Pirates’ Bafana Boom: Why Abdeslam Ouaddou Says The Nation Now Looks To Mayfair

by nikita.m

Orlando Pirates have been on a quiet takeover mission in South African football this season, and it’s not just reflected in trophies or league standings. Their fingerprints are all over Bafana Bafana too, and coach Abdeslam Ouaddou couldn’t be prouder.

While many clubs talk about being for the nation, Pirates are proving it on the pitch. With AFCON around the corner, the Soweto giants have emerged as the biggest supplier of talent to Hugo Broos’ provisional squad, and their coach believes this moment reflects years of graft, belief and evolution at Mayfair.

Pirates’ National Team Influence Hits A New High

Twelve Pirates players cracked the preliminary AFCON squad, a number unheard of in recent years.

For Ouaddou, those names on the list such as Sipho Chaine, Evidence Makgopa, Relebohile Mofokeng and Patric Maswanganyi are more than just selections. They are proof that the system is working.

The friendly against Zambia reinforced that point. Oswin Appollis and Sipho Mbule combined beautifully for South Africa’s opener. Former Buccaneer Mohau Nkota added a second from Mbule’s delivery, and despite a late lapse from Chaine, the 3–1 win felt like a statement: Pirates players can carry a national team.

Ouaddou’s Message: ‘We Are Working For The Nation’

After Pirates’ midweek performance against Chippa United, where Appollis scored again, Ouaddou addressed the growing influence of his players.

“For the club, we must be proud,” he said. “We are working for the nation. We prepare players to go to AFCON. The club has a duty to provide good players who can perform for the country.”

His tone wasn’t boastful. It was patriotic. There is something deeply South African about the way Ouaddou frames his philosophy: football is national work, and clubs are guardians of future Bafana stars.

It’s the same spirit fans recognise from the 2010 World Cup generation, when Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Sundowns all produced leaders for the national side. Now, in 2025, Pirates find themselves at the centre of that responsibility again.

Who’s Still Knocking On Broos’ Door?

Yet the story isn’t complete without those still on the outside looking in.

Tshegofatso Mabasa, the in-form striker praised for his work rate and finishing, has openly said he dreams of joining the AFCON squad. At 29, he knows time is no longer on his side. A late call-up is possible, but if not, the 2026 World Cup qualifiers may become his next target.

Sinoxolo Kwayiba, once considered a strong contender, has struggled to hit top gear under Ouaddou. The coach hinted that the winger still has gears to unlock, but a strong run of form is needed for him to re-enter national team contention.

A Club In Form, A Country In Focus

What makes Pirates’ national influence even more meaningful is the timing.

They have already lifted silverware this season, sit level with Sundowns on 25 points in the league, and are preparing for the Carling Knockout Cup final. Despite a tough CAF Champions League exit, the team’s domestic command remains clear.

The result is a Bafana Bafana core built in Mayfair. And as South Africa prepares for another AFCON campaign, that connection between club and country feels more important than ever.

Ouaddou knows this moment is bigger than Pirates’ badge.

“We are at the disposal of the country,” he said. “And I’m very happy for the players.”

For supporters, this isn’t just pride. It’s hope. A belief that South Africa’s next great football chapter may once again begin in Soweto.
