How to embrace self-compassion during stressful times

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become an all too familiar companion. Whether it’s economic pressures, personal setbacks or global uncertainties, managing stress is essential for maintaining mental and emotional well-being.

Embracing self-compassion can be a powerful tool to navigate turbulent times with kindness and resilience.

Here are some effective ways to consider:

Acknowledge your feelings without judgement

The first step is to acknowledge your emotions without criticism. Instead of saying, “I shouldn’t feel this way,” gently accept that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed or anxious. Giving yourself permission to feel is the foundation of self-compassion.

Speak to yourself as you would a friend

If a close friend is going through a tough time, you’re likely to offer words of comfort and encouragement. Extend that same kindness to yourself. Replace self-criticism with supportive, reassuring words. For example, say, “It’s okay to feel stressed right now. I’m doing my best.”

Practice mindful breathing

Taking a few deep, mindful breaths can help anchor you in the present moment. Focus on your breath, inhaling slowly through your nose and exhaling gently through your mouth. This simple act can reduce feelings of anxiety and foster a sense of calm.

Set realistic expectations

During stressful periods, it’s important to adjust your expectations. Allow yourself grace by setting achievable goals and taking things one step at a time. Remember, progress, not perfection, is what matters most.

Connect with your community

Reach out to friends, family or community groups for support. Sharing your feelings and hearing others’ experiences can remind you that you’re not alone.

Prioritise self-care

Engage in activities that nourish your body and soul. This could include enjoying a walk in a local park, listening to music or practicing a hobby. Small acts of self-care reinforce your worth and bolster your resilience.
