All you need to know before boarding a cruise

There’s something irresistibly glamorous about boarding a cruise ship – think departure scenes from Titanic. That moment when your luggage disappears into the hands of friendly porters, a glass of champagne finds its way into yours, and the open sea stretches out like an endless invitation.

Whether you’re sailing through the Mediterranean, island-hopping in the Caribbean, or exploring the coast of South Africa, a cruise is the ultimate summer indulgence — part adventure, part floating luxury hotel.

But before you set sail and start curating those dreamy deckside snaps, there are a few insider tips every chic traveler should know. Consider this your pre-boarding checklist to make sure your first (or next) cruise is nothing short of smooth sailing.

Choose your cruise line like you’d choose a hotel

Not all cruises are created equal. Some feel like five-star floating resorts, others lean into family fun or adventure.
Pro tip: Check the itinerary carefully — some “Mediterranean cruises” spend more time at sea than docked in dreamy ports, while others offer more on-land exploring.

Pack smart (and light) — Yes, really

It’s easy to overpack when you picture endless outfit changes — chic resort wear for lounging, cocktail dresses for dinner, something breezy for island excursions. But remember, cabin storage is minimal, and you’ll likely rewear your favourites.

Pack like a pro:

  • A versatile white linen set (works from pool to port)
  • One evening outfit you love (you’ll wear it twice, trust me)
  • Flat sandals for shore days and block heels for evenings
  • A light cardigan — it gets surprisingly chilly on deck at night
And don’t forget sunscreen, seasickness bands, and a portable charger.

The secret to avoiding seasickness

Even seasoned travelers can feel queasy at sea. If you’re prone to motion sickness, choose a mid-ship cabin on a lower deck — it’s the most stable area. Start taking ginger tablets or motion sickness medication a day before you board. And when in doubt, fresh air and keeping your eyes on the horizon really does help.

Internet at sea — Manage your expectations

Yes, most modern ships offer Wi-Fi, but it’s not the high-speed kind you’re used to on land. If you’re a digital creator or need to check in with work, buy the premium plan — or embrace the idea of a semi-digital detox. Download your playlists, podcasts, and e-books before boarding.

Sometimes disconnecting is part of the magic.

Plan your shore days wisely

Ports are where the real magic happens — think sipping espresso in Amalfi, snorkeling in St. Lucia, or exploring the local markets of Mykonos. You can book excursions through the cruise line, but independent local tours often offer more authentic experiences (and smaller groups).

Just remember – the ship won’t wait if you’re late back, so always keep an eye on the time.

Don’t sleep on the onboard experiences

From sunrise yoga on deck to sunset wine tastings and rooftop movie nights, cruises are designed for indulgence. Explore every level of the ship early on — there are often hidden gems like quiet lounges, adult-only decks, and secret sun spots that make your voyage feel more exclusive.

Cruise etiquette 101

Cruising has its own rhythm — and a touch of old-world glamour. Dress codes still apply for certain dinners, and tipping etiquette varies by cruise line. Be kind to the crew (they work magic behind the scenes) and punctual for excursions. A little effort goes a long way toward making the experience more enjoyable for everyone onboard.

Capture the moments — But be present

It’s tempting to chase the perfect golden-hour deck photo (and yes, get it!), but don’t forget to live those moments too. There’s something grounding about being surrounded by nothing but sea and sky — the stillness, the sunsets, the quiet mornings with coffee and salt air. Those are the moments that stay with you long after you’ve docked.

Cruising is more than a holiday — it’s a state of mind. It’s the gentle hum of the ship beneath your feet, the glint of sunlight off the waves, the slow pace that makes you forget what day it is. So, pack your best summer linens, slip into your most effortless self, and let the ocean set your itinerary.

Because sometimes, the best adventures begin where the land ends.
