Gauteng Health in Turmoil: R2 Billion Corruption Exposed
Gauteng’s health sector has been rocked by scandal after Premier Panyaza Lesufi suspended the head of the Department of Health and Wellness, Lesiba Arnold Malotana. The decision follows a damning interim report from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), which uncovered irregular contracts and fraudulent activities totaling R2 billion at Tembisa Hospital.
The report, released last week, implicates at least three syndicates operating within the hospital, involving a staggering 207 service providers and over 4,500 purchase orders. Gauteng Department of Health officials, ranging from clerks to senior managers, are reported to have personally benefited to the tune of R122 million. Authorities warn this number could rise as the investigation continues.
Acting Head Appointed to Ensure Stability
To safeguard the integrity of the probe and maintain departmental continuity, Lesufi appointed Dr Darion Barclay, who currently leads the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, as acting Health HOD.
“He will ensure stability and continuity in this critical department, and his appointment highlights the importance of prioritising seamless service delivery,” Lesufi said. The move is designed to protect both the investigation and the department from further disruption.
Transparency and Accountability in Focus
The Premier’s Office confirmed that performance agreements for Members of the Executive Council (MECs) will be made public on 16 October 2025, signaling a push for greater accountability and transparency in provincial governance. Lesufi emphasized that the government remains committed to rooting out maladministration and enforcing ethical leadership in all departments.
This high-profile suspension sends a strong message: corruption in Gauteng’s health system will not be tolerated, and even senior officials are not above scrutiny.
Social and Public Reaction
Public reaction has been swift, with many South Africans expressing frustration over the misuse of public funds in a sector already stretched thin. On social media, citizens highlighted the urgent need for accountability, especially as Tembisa Hospital is a critical health facility serving thousands of patients daily.
“This is a wake-up call. The health system cannot afford this level of corruption,” tweeted one concerned citizen. Another added, “Finally, action is being taken. We need clean governance if our hospitals are to serve the people properly.”
A Broader Context
Tembisa Hospital has long been a pivotal institution in Gauteng’s public healthcare system, serving the densely populated Ekurhuleni region. Over the years, reports of irregular procurement and mismanagement have surfaced, but the SIU’s recent investigation is among the most comprehensive probes into provincial health corruption in recent memory.
As the investigation continues, Gauteng residents will be watching closely. The outcome could reshape leadership accountability in one of South Africa’s most critical public service sectors, while also highlighting the ongoing battle against systemic corruption.
