Ways to celebrate your heritage this September

PICTURE: UNSPLASH/ HERITAGE MONTH

The month of September is known to be a time of celebrating heritage, traditions and culture.

A country like South Africa that boasts undeniable diversity is expected to have various cultures and traditions. Here is what you can do to celebrate your heritage this month:

Braai or picnic:

You can gather friends and family for a traditional South African braai or a relaxed picnic with local treats like biltong, vetkoek, and koeksisters at a scenic spot. This laid-back approach allows you to soak in the beauty of nature, while enjoying a relaxed celebration of Heritage Day.

Attend cultural events:

You can look for festivals, music performances, and other community events happening near you, or organise your own gathering with family and friends. Visiting cultural events can present a wonderful opportunity to learn about different cultures and historic sites that exist around in the country.

Learn a new language:

Make an effort to learn some basic phrases like how to greet in another official South African language. You can find online resources to help you. Making an effort to learn another language brings people together and makes it easy for those who come from different cultural backgrounds to communicate.

Wear traditional clothing:

You can proudly wear your traditional cultural attire or wear something that represents your heritage. This will make you feel connected to your culture, and might lead to someone else wanting to learn more about your heritage.

Visit museums and heritage sites:

You can explore local museums or significant heritage sites to learn more about the rich history and culture of South Africa. You can have a great time without spending a cent as some museums are free to explore on this special day.
