All eyes are on General Mkhwanazi and the Madlanga Commission

While the rest of the world runs in circles regarding Charlie Kirk’s assassination, South Africa has shifted its attention to the highly anticipated Madlanga Commission, where General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi sat as the first witness.

After what he describes as various efforts to garner the attention of the relevant individuals and structures with no success, KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Police Commissioner, General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, held an explosive press briefing, during which he made several accusations of crime and corruption against notable political figures, including Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu.

This press briefing quickly caught the public’s attention. It garnered some intense reactions from frustrated citizens, forcing President Ramaphosa to act swiftly and thus establishing a judicial inquiry that is tasked with getting to the bottom of Mkhwanazi’s allegations. Since the briefing in July, the SAPS has surprisingly made significant progress on some cases that had gone cold or had been abandoned, including the high-profile 2022 DJ Sumbody shooting.

After some suspicious delays, as well as an anxiety-inducing build up, the Madlanga Commission has finally marked their proceedings open, and saw KZN’s top cop taking the stand as the first witness. In his usual cool, calm, and collected demeanor, Mkhwanazi doubled down on his accusations and committed to substantiating his claims with accompanying evidence and witnesses.

National commissioner please speak to the minister. Nothing is happening
Check with the president, I’m not getting any feedback

At the crux of his allegations, Mkhwanazi has revealed that he believes that Minister Senzo Mchunu was convinced by another individual to disband the Political Killings Task Team, as it was believed to have been digging into the criminal syndicates in Gauteng. According to Mkhwanazi, this would have implicated the minister, along with other notable officials, as he reveals he has proof tying him to several alleged criminals.
