A TikTok video of a Cape Town shopper using Checkers’ latest innovation, the smart self-checkout trolley, has gone viral, sparking a fierce debate, with critics warning of job losses and crime risks, while supporters praising its convenience.

The video showcases Jessica Kleinjan effortlessly scanning items with the trolley’s built-in scanner before placing them in her cart. Her caption praised Checkers’ innovation, which aims to streamline the shopping process, as mentioned by Briefly News.

The clip quickly gained traction, with users sharing mixed reactions to the new technology, some applauding its convenience, while others expressed skepticism about its broader implementation.

The video prompted strong reactions, as one user warned, ‘Great, more unemployment,’ echoing concerns about job losses for cashiers.

Another countered, ‘Yes, because personally I’m tired of rude cashiers,’ highlighting frustrations with current service.

A third raised security fears: ‘SA Criminals are also innovative, this won’t work.’ A fourth reiterated, ‘Wow that’s a good way to up the unemployment rate.’

Jessica responded to concerns, clarifying that the trolley doesn’t eliminate checkout queues but speeds them up.

The Xpress Trolley, which was piloted at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and Checkers Constantia, allows shoppers to scan items via a built-in touchscreen, track spending in real-time, and pay directly at a dedicated exit lane using saved card details, all without unloading groceries or queueing.

@jessica_kleinjan This is so fun and convenient. Thank you @Checkers South Africa for bring this out #checkers #shops #foryou #makethisgoviral ♬ Turn My Swag On – Soulja Boy Tell’em
