A South African giant enters Hollywood’s inner circle

Dr John Kani, South Africa’s most beloved stage and screen veteran, has been elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body behind the Oscars. At 81, Kani adds another milestone to a career that has spanned decades and shaped both South African theatre and international cinema.

Sharing the news on X, the Black Panther star wrote, “I promise to serve this institution with honesty and integrity.” For many South Africans, this statement summed up what Kani has always represented: an artist whose work is matched by his moral authority.

Only three South Africans ever honoured

Kani’s election puts him alongside just two other South Africans: the late casting director Moonyeenn Lee and acclaimed producer Anant Singh. That makes him only the third in history to be part of the Academy, which decides who wins the coveted Oscars each year.

Academy membership cannot be applied for. Candidates are nominated by two current members, then reviewed by committees before the Board of Governors gives final approval. To be invited is a signal of international respect and recognition.

Social media celebrates “Elder JK”

The announcement sparked an outpouring of joy online. Advocate Thuli Madonsela congratulated Kani, calling him “super inspiring.” Another follower wrote, “You are integrity to the institution. Camagu!” One fan cheered him on as “the first African to be elected to serve” in the Academy, with messages of “Halala Elder JK” echoing across timelines.

A career already crowned with honours

This is not Kani’s first global recognition. In 2024, he received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from King Charles III for services to drama. The OBE is one of the UK’s most prestigious awards, acknowledging extraordinary contributions across arts and public service.

From his fearless apartheid-era plays like Sizwe Banzi is Dead and The Island to modern blockbusters like Black Panther, Kani has carried South Africa’s stories onto the world stage while staying deeply rooted in his community.

Why it matters

Kani’s Academy seat is more than a personal accolade. It signals that South African voices are being recognised in global storytelling spaces that have historically excluded them. For the local film industry, still hungry for international recognition and support, it is a reminder that homegrown talent belongs at the highest level.

As one fan put it, “You are a blessing to us all.” For South Africans, Dr John Kani’s legacy has always been more than performance. It is a mirror of resilience, culture, and truth carried into the global spotlight.
