‘I want to marry a billionaire’ – Capetonian woman in London’s comments cause a stir

A clip of a young woman claiming to be from Cape Town has gone viral, drawing sharp reactions online after she declared she doesn’t work – because she doesn’t have to.

The video, shared on the popular Instagram account @talkingtosociety and already racking up 1.7 million views, captures the moment when the host, known for walking up to strangers on the streets of London and asking what they do for a living, interviews the young woman.

Her response? “I don’t do anything. Why would I do something for a living?”

When asked how she makes money, she replies, “I don’t. I just have rich parents.” She goes on to explain that her father is a billionaire, as was her grandfather.

Later in the exchange, the host asks about her future aspirations. Her answer has only added fuel to the online discourse: “My biggest goal for the future is to marry a billionaire.”

However, the question the host poses to her about the main distinction between living in South Africa and London is perhaps the one that has generated the most criticism online.

“Well, London is a first-world country,’ she says. ‘South Africa’s a third world country, so…”

The exchange has struck a nerve with many South Africans, who took to the comments to question whether she fairly reflects the country’s people or viewpoint, as well as her comprehension of the socioeconomic complexity of the country.

Others have taken a lighter view, noting the satirical value of such interviews and the exaggerated wealth gap the video puts on full display.

@talkingtosociety has made a name on TikTok and Instagram for his street-style interviews, often drawing humour, inspiration, or debate from unscripted conversations with strangers. The account boasts over 20 million views on TikTok alone.

While the woman’s identity remains unknown, the video continues to spark heated discussion around privilege, perceptions of South Africa abroad, and what it really means to ‘do something for a living’.
