The Florida Panthers moved within one win of the Stanley Cup Final after a dominant 6-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.
The Panthers now lead the best-of-seven series 3-0. They can finish it off in Game 4, which will also be played in Florida.
A tight match turned into a rout in the third period. Florida scored five goals in just over ten minutes to blow the game wide open. Captain Aleksander Barkov led from the front with two goals and an assist. Jesper Boqvist and Niko Mikkola each added two goals, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves in goal.
Boqvist was brought into the team due to Sam Reinhart’s injury. He made his impact felt quickly, scoring the go-ahead goal on a breakaway early in the third. That opened the floodgates. Mikkola scored again. Barkov struck twice, and Brad Marchand added another.
By the time Carolina responded through Seth Jarvis, the game was out of reach.
The Hurricanes had their chances. They equalised in the second period after a power-play goal from Logan Stankoven. However, their defence crumbled when it mattered most.
Florida’s penalty kill also stood tall earlier in the game. Eetu Luostarinen received a game misconduct for boarding in the first period. The Panthers played most of the match without two of their top defensive forwards. Despite this, they handled the pressure and responded with clinical attack.
Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour was frustrated after the match. He pointed to costly turnovers and poor decision-making. “You can’t do that against a team like this,” he said. “We gave them too much.”
The Hurricanes have now lost 15 straight games in the Eastern Conference Final. Seven of those defeats have come against Florida.
For the Panthers, it is all about staying focused. “We don’t look ahead,” said Marchand. “We are prepared to go the distance if needed.”
Florida have now scored five or more goals in four straight playoff games. Only two other teams have done that in the past 30 years. They are hitting form at the perfect time.
Game 4 takes place on Monday. Carolina will need something special to avoid elimination. The Panthers, on the other hand, are full of confidence. They are playing as a unit, staying calm under pressure, and punishing mistakes.
Another win will send them to a third straight Stanley Cup Final. Judging by this performance, they do not look like a team that will be stopped anytime soon.
