It takes a village to raise a child, even though the child is no more.
Recently, a story of a 14-year-old boy from Eastern Cape who died for stealing bread has surfaced in the streets of Facebook, touching people’s hearts.
The boy and his brother who come from a disadvantaged background, were found in their neighbour’s house where they had broken in and stole bread and instant porridge. The story narrated by a family member revealed that the two boys were then caught and were beaten up in their home where they endured severe injuries.
They were later rushed to hospital where the 14-year-old passed away, and the 16-year-old still in a critical state in hospital. We do not condone theft but social media users were moved by the fact that the boy died because of hunger. However, two suspects have been arrested.
Influencer and businesswoman, Zandiswa Swazi Msikinya is one of the people who was touched by this story and started an initiative to help out the family with groceries. She shared on her Facebook page pleading for donations, the Facebook family took this to heart and donated money which is currently sitting on R27k.
Since they boy had already been buried, Swazi requested a tombstone donation for him. One user, Jason Saint Zuma offered to make a beautiful tombstone for the boy.
Swazi is known for using her platform to help people, her followers have been wishing her well since this initiative started. She shared that she will organise a date to go visit the family and do the handover.
