The Boston Red Sox were dealt a major blow on Saturday as first baseman Triston Casas was placed on the 10-day injured list with a ruptured left patellar tendon.

Casas suffered the injury during Friday night’s 6-1 win over the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park. In the bottom of the second inning, Casas hustled down the line after a check-swing tapper that pitcher Joe Ryan misplayed. As Casas reached first base, his left foot struck the foot of Twins first baseman Ty France, causing him to fall awkwardly on his left knee. He was stretchered off the field.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora described it as a “significant knee injury” and noted Casas appeared to be in shock as trainers attended to him. “He works so hard and we want him on the field. That was a hustle play,” Cora said.

Casas, 25, is hitting .182 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 29 games this season. He was also limited to 63 games last year due to a rib cage injury.

In corresponding moves, the Red Sox reinstated left-hander Brennan Bernardino from the bereavement list, activated infielder Abraham Toro from Triple-A Worcester, and optioned right-hander Luis Guerrero back to Worcester.
