The family of a Grade 4 pupil at Moriting Primary, a school in the South of Limpopo’s Capricorn education district, are still in a state of shock following the death of their child.

According to a statement issued by the Limpopo Department of Education, the learner, whose name has not been disclosed, died after accidentally swallowing a pen cap.

The statement further revealed that after he struggled with difficulty breathing, he later sought the assistance of his educator, who acted rapidly to ensure that he received medical treatment and rushed him to the hospital.

Unfortunately, he was later pronounced dead.

“Immediate action was taken to rush him to the hospital; however, despite the best efforts of the medical staff, they were unable to save him,” said departmental spokesperson Mike Maringa.

Following the tragic event, the department has extended its condolences to the family, friends as well as all others who have been affected by the loss.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the learner’s family during this heartbreaking time. No parent should bury their child. To her little classmates and teachers, we encourage them to stay strong,” said MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya.

Meanwhile, it has been stated that the department has offered its assistance to those who have been directly impacted by offering psychosocial teams to the family and pupils at the school.

More investigations are currently being done to further delve into the root of the incident.
