How active listening strengthens your relationships

You must have heard of the term “Active listening.” It’s so easy to let conversations slip by without really tuning in when we’re caught up in life’s whirlwind.

But what if we told you that the secret to deeper, more meaningful relationships is something as simple as listening?

Verywell Mind states that the ability to process and comprehend the meaning of another person’s words is known as active listening, and it calls for mindfulness and focused participation in the communication process. Other requirements include being present, keeping good eye contact, observing non-verbal cues, asking open-ended questions, paraphrasing, listening to understand, and refraining from passing judgment or offering advice.

In simple terms, there’s a feeling of trust. By paying attention to what they have to say rather than only waiting for an opportunity to talk about yourself, you show the other person that you care. It improves the emotional bond because, let’s be honest, one of the most powerful experiences in a relationship is feeling understood.

According to Sabrina Romanoff, a doctor specialising in psychology, “Active listening requires de-centering from one’s fixed position to be fully present with another. It helps people feel more understood and strengthens relationships as it signals a willingness to sit with the other’s perspective and empathy for their situation instead of singular focus on oneself.”

The above specialist further adds that by actively indicating that the other person matters to them, the listener demonstrates respect and value for their needs, worries, and opinions.

So, try putting your phone aside, keeping eye contact, and paying close attention to what the other person is saying the next time you’re speaking with them. You might be shocked at just how much stronger your relationships get and how much deeper your connections go.
