The inception and ever-progressing nature of technology and social media has given rise to the most creative ways to express oneself, and memes have become one of the most popular ways to do so. We often see the faces of strangers shared across multiple platforms and the world, however, how often do you think of the faces and people behind these memes?

The list below consists of the faces of some of Mzansi’s most popular ‘unknown’ faces, who have circulated across countless phones

1. Siyabonga Makhavhu

Although her name might not ring a bell, Siyabonga’s face is a familiar one across Mzansi after she blew up following an appearance on the popular SABC 1 TV show ‘Speak Out’. It is on this show where Siyabonga trended for her ‘Where are the pots?” saga as she found herself in deep trouble over a catering mishap.

2. Asisipho Burwana

Due to his funny nature, Asisipho has quickly become an internet favourite, particularly on X (formerly Twitter) where he has a significant following. Due to his expressive and animated nature, his pictures and videos often make the rounds on social media as his memes tend to depict even what users cannot put into words, giving life to the phrase ‘a picture is worth 1000 words.’

3. Nathanial Junoir Oliphant (Formerly Junior Singo)

Although Nathaniel stepped into the limelight at an extremely young age and was involved in a plethora of projects throughout his career, the media personality will live in the minds of many South Africans for his popular meme that has echoed the sentiments of many who could not find the adequate words.

4. Hlaudi Motsoeneng

Leader of the African Content Movement(ACM), Hlaudi Mostoeneng is one of the most recognisable faces in the country, however, this cannot be credited to his political achievements or ideologies. Conversely, he blew up on the internet and is now unofficially known as Mr ‘That thing’ for his popular remarks.
