Curious about electrolyte drinks? Here’s what you need to know

Consider electrolyte drinks an energy boost. They are perfect for individuals who exercise regularly or need a refresher due to an illness such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

According to Medical News Today, “The term electrolyte refers to the fact that electrolytes are substances with an electrical charge. Many bodily functions rely on a small electric current, which electrolytes provide.”

The above health source also states that in terms of nutrition, electrolytes refer to minerals that are essential to the body’s function. Among them are magnesium, chloride, phosphate, sodium, and chloride.

It is also mentioned by the above publication, “These minerals are important for many bodily functions, such as keeping the body hydrated, controlling the body’s nervous system, and balancing the body’s acidic and basic (pH) levels.”

When do you need an electrolyte drink?

According to the Health publication, during extended periods of intense physical activity, particularly in warm or muggy weather, an electrolyte drink can assist in replenishing lost fluids and vital minerals from perspiration.

Here are a few electrolyte drinks to try out:

According to the health-focused publication, Healthline, “Electrolyte tablets are a convenient, inexpensive, and portable way to make your own electrolyte drink no matter where you are.”

It is mentioned by the above-mentioned publication that in addition to being a good source of potassium, coconut water, the natural beverage made from green coconuts, also contains other important electrolytes including calcium, magnesium, and sodium.

Verywellhealth claims that after exercise, a low-sugar sports drink can provide you with a rapid boost of electrolytes. Gatorade is the perfect example of this,  a sports drink with electrolytes, carbs, and fluids but has less sugar.

The above health publication warns against high in sugar sports drinks, stating that high electrolyte levels can result from consuming sports drinks when you haven’t lost any fluid.

“This may cause headaches, confusion, fatigue, stomach upset, and muscle cramps,” the above source further claims.
