The country has woken up in a state of shock following the news that the former Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan has died.

According to a report by EyeWitness News (EWN) the well-respected politician passed away in the early hours of Friday morning after being admitted to hospital on Tuesday following a short battle with cancer.

A statement released by family representatives stated: “Mr Gordhan passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by his family, closest friends and his lifelong comrades of the liberation struggle in the early hours of this morning.”

Pravin, a pharmacist by profession served several years as finance minister after taking over the reins of former minister, Trevor Manuel.

Despite, joining the portfolio during what may have been the worst time to do so, during state capture, he was determined to expose architects thereof.

News publication IOL reports that the former minister officially retired from politics in May this year to spend more time with his family.

When it was revealed that he was hospitalised earlier this week ANC’s acting national spokesperson, Zuko Godlimpi, shared a statement wishing him a speedy recovery.

“During this time of health challenges, our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and we are confident that the strength and determination he possesses will see him through this period,” said Zuko.

Meanwhile, he is survived by his wife Vanitha and his daughters Anisha and Priyesha.

The Gordhan family requests that their privacy be respected during this difficult time of grief.

Meanwhile, the Gordhan family asked the public to give them privacy during this time, adding that funeral arrangements will be made and announced in due course.
