Music streaming platform Spotify is objectively the most popular streaming platform in the world with over 626 million users. However, providing listeners with a convenient platform to find all their favourite artists’ songs is not the only thing this company wants to be known for.

The streaming platform is set to host its ‘Mother of Music’ (MOM) festival, which is a four-day event which will pay homage to and celebrate the Mother City’s contributions to the overall creative landscape in South Africa, as well as the African continent as a whole.

“This event honours the city’s extraordinary contribution to local and global music sub-scenes and fuels the creative spirit of its upcoming artists. Through MOM, we aim to celebrate the past, present, and future of Cape Town’s music culture,” said Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa Phiona Okumu.

The four-day event is set to take place from 5-8 September, with festivities taking place in various locations around the city. The event will be free to access for all music lovers and enthusiasts interested in immersing themselves in Cape Town’s music landscape and its intricate history.

Spotify has launched a playlist on its platform dedicated to the different creatives that have contributed to the culture we know today which includes the likes of Dee Koala, Vince Staples, Youngsta CPT and many more local artists. Attendees can also expect an electric launch party, a street party as well as a grand finale at the popular Rands location in Khayelitsha.
