Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis can be challenging for anyone, children and adults. It is especially challenging when you find yourself trying out different skincare treatments. If you have any concerns about your skin condition, particularly, eczema, skin care experts suggest that a bleach bath just might be what you need.

Eczema is defined by the health publication, Medical News Today as an inflammatory condition that causes itchy, rough, and cracked patches of skin.

What is an eczema bleach bath?

According to Dr. Sindhuga Sominidi Damodaran, a dermatologist, an eczema bleach bath consists of water and household bleach. She also adds that it is safe for both children and adults if it is properly diluted and used as directed.

How to prepare a bleach bath?

According to the health and wellness publication, Healthline, “A standard bathtub, which contains 40 gallons of water, will only need a 1/2 cup of bleach to be an effective bleach bath.” The health hub advises you to ensure that you adjust the amount of water in the bathtub depending on the size of your bathtub.

The above-mentioned health hub explains that when preparing a bleach bath, it should contain mostly water and a low amount of bleach. They further advise the use of household bleach as opposed to a concentrated formula.

What are the benefits:

Dr Damodaran further explains that an eczema bleach bath helps reduce itching, rashes and scaling. It is most effective when combined with other eczema treatments, such as medicine and moisturizer, says the dermatologist.

Possible risks:

According to the above-mentioned dermatology specialist, taking bleach baths too often and using a huge amount of bleach may cause dry skin. ”If your skin is cracked or very dry, any bath may be painful,” she further explains.

It is advised to consult with a healthcare professional before trying out any home remedies.
