A good toothbrush is crucial for maintaining healthy teeth and gums, we all know we should be brushing our teeth twice per day but how often do you really need to change your toothbrush?

According to Oral-B many dental professionals recommend changing your toothbrush about every three months, and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you replace your toothbrush approximately every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

Over time, toothbrushes wear out and become less effective at removing plaque and bacteria, potentially leading to dental problems. Verywell Health highlights the following signs which indicats that it’s time to change your toothbrush.

Frayed or Worn Bristles
Appearance: Bristles that are frayed, bent, or worn down are less effective at cleaning your teeth and gums.

After an Illness
Contamination: If you’ve been sick, your toothbrush can keep bacteria, viruses, or fungi that could cause reinfection.

Structural Damage
Handle Damage: Cracks or other damage to the toothbrush handle can make it less effective and harder to use.

Additional tips for toothbrush care as recommended by Verywell health.

Storage: Store your toothbrush upright and let it air dry to prevent bacterial growth.

Sharing: Avoid sharing toothbrushes to minimize the risk of cross-contamination.

Cleaning: Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly with tap water after each use. Also never share your toothbrush.

Some would ask what would happens if one doesn’t change their toothbrush. According to ToothShow, a toothbrush must be clean to effectively clean your teeth. If you don’t then its bristles become frayed and worn, reducing their cleaning ability. Additionally, bacteria can pile up on an old toothbrush, causing gum disease and other oral health issues.
