All there is to know about sleeping with socks on

As the colder winter months are in sight, it may be time to open those cupboards and re-introduce your room to the thick, warm fleece blankets and everything else you need to ensure that your slumber is as sweet as it can be.

Adjusting to falling asleep on a cold winter’s night may be easier said than done. This is because many still find themselves in the routine of sleeping under two thin blankets—just enough to keep them cool during the warm summer nights. Another thing people have fallen into the routine of doing is removing those socks in the middle of the night, as it increases one’s bodily heat in addition to the atmospheric heat during the summer.

However, we are no longer in the summer, and doing this during the winter months can result in you experiencing restless nights due to freezing feet that keep you awake. This is why wearing socks is extremely important during this time of the year.

According to research done by the medical research company Cleveland Clinic, wearing socks is known to drastically improve one’s quality of sleep.

The Sleep Foundation elaborates on the reason for this, stating that “the human body experiences heating and cooling rhythms throughout the day according to each one’s circadian rhythm.”

“During waking hours, human body temperature sits at about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) and can vary up to half a degree during the day. Lower body temperatures usually precede sleepiness, and evidence suggests that using socks or other foot-warming methods may lower your core body temperature and help you fall asleep faster.”

Meanwhile, the health and wellness information hub Healthline has revealed that not only does sleeping with socks improve the quality of sleep, but several additional benefits come with it.

These include the following:

Prevent hot flashes: Some women find wearing socks helpful for cooling their core body temperature.

Improve cracked heels: Wearing cotton socks after you moisturise can help keep your heels from drying out.

Increase potential orgasms: According to the BBC, researchers accidentally discovered that wearing socks increased participants’ ability to achieve an orgasm by 30 per cent.
