Pitch Black Afro maintains his innocence post prison sentence

by Limpho Nonkonyane

Kwaito artist Pitch Black Afro, whose real name is Thulani Ngcobo, still maintains his innocence six months after being released from prison.

The musician was accused of killing his wife Catherine ‘Trisha’ Modisane who was found dead on the 31st of  December 2018 at a bed and breakfast in Johannesburg. He was given a special remission where he served half of his 10-year sentence.

During a recent interview with entertainment publication ZiMoja, Pitch Black Afro was candid about the fact that police unlawfully arrested him on the allegations that he killed his wife. He added that the evidence was not enough for him to be charged for the murder.

He also told the entertainment publication that he and his wife would fight but it never turned into a physical fight. “Jail was traumatic. My heart was broken because I could not say goodbye to my best friend and I was locked up like an animal in a cage,” he says.

Previous reports by News24 suggested that Catherine died of blunt force trauma to the head.

During the trial, prosecutor Matshiliso Moleko stated that evidence led the State to speculate that he assaulted his wife, given that they were together that fateful night.

“I will rule out the element of negligence. The accused, in the manner he assaulted Modisane, could have seen that the injuries were severe. Although he could not have had the intention to kill, he had the intention of dolus eventualis.”

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the verdict was respected and they didn’t appeal for the conviction.
