Price of peanut butter shocks the internet

With the coronavirus pandemic, continuous load shedding and several other factors affecting the rate of South Africa’s inflation, many citizens are now shocked to discover that even some of the most basic sandwich spreads can now cost you an arm and a leg.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), one user shared a picture which highlights how much a jar of peanut butter could cost you.

Sharing the post with some of his followers, the user expressed his shock, writing: “Haibo?” along with a crying emoji.

Shocked by what the realities have become, many users got into the discussion, sharing their experiences of living in modern South Africa.

One user expressed his frustration by questioning whether the prices are justified.

“I’m not disputing the fact that we cannot afford it, but the prices of some goods are really questionable at this point, yet your Unemployment Relief Fund is R350?”

He was not the only one as many others became a part of the conversation, adding that they fear their children may never get to experience a proper peanut butter and jam sandwich.

Another questioned how many of her subscriptions she needed to cancel before being able to afford a basic food basket.

“So, after you’ve cancelled streaming services, Wi-Fi, stopped eating out, downgraded your car, swapped your three-bed rental for a bachelor with your two kids, stopped buying butter and olive oil, what else do you need to give up to be able to afford groceries? Because not eating is next.”
