Don’t let the looks fool you! Chicken feet, a snack enjoyed by most South Africans and considered a delicacy to other countries abroad, will soon be exported to China.

The trade, which will also create at least 3000 new jobs, sees Wesgro – a Western Cape tourism and promotion agency – and Standard Bank team up with trading consultancy AskCarlaKote to deliver a whopping 540 tonnes of chicken feet each month to the Asian country. The company will also partner with female-owned poultry farms in the Western Cape and Mpumalanga, reports DispatchLIVE.

“This deal holds enormous potential for South African poultry farmers and our clients, says Carla Kote, founder of AskCarlaKote. “While we have experienced some delays due to the recent bird flu outbreak in the country, we are optimistic that once all regulatory hurdles have been addressed, we will be sending our first test order to China before the end of the year.”

Carla adds that Standard Bank has also promised their support to assist in the growth of the broilers and abattoirs within the company’s supply chain, saying, “The agriculture departments in Mpumalanga and Western Cape have also thrown their full support behind this initiative.”

The above-mentioned publication shares that chicken feet makes up about 50% of China’s annual chicken imports, and is often seen used in dishes such as soups, stews and also served as a snack.

It is also stated that the “global demand for poultry products from countries like China has been steadily on the rise, positioning South Africa’s poultry industry for significant expansion.”
