SA celebrities who didn’t make it to 2024

The year 2023 saw South Africans mourn the loss of a few beloved celebrities who have made a name for themselves as well as a huge impact in the entertainment industry.

From award-winning artists to respected journalists to esteemed authors, here is a list of prominent local figures the nation lost in 2023.

Mbongeni Ngema

Best known for his hit musical-turned-movie Sarafina!, legendary playwright, composer, and choreographer Mbongeni Ngema died on 27 December in a head-on collision on his way back from a funeral in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.

Zahara

Multi-award-winning singer Bulelwa Mkutukana, who was professionally known as Zahara, was laid to rest on 23 December after her untimely passing on 11 December due to liver complications, as reported by ZiMoja.

Lebogang ‘Lettie’ Mpyana

Comedian and actress Lebohang ‘Lettie’ Mpyana – who portrayed the role of Khelina on the show DiepCity, and was also well-known for her social media skits as Queen Skwatakwata – passed away on 1 November as a result of a short illness, as shared by her family via a statement.

Zoleka Mandela

Battling metastatic cancer and enduring countless trips to the hospital did not stop celebrated activist and author Zoleka Mandela from sharing her journey. The granddaughter of former South African president Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela died on 25 September surrounded by family and friends.

Derek Watts

Derek Watts picture: X

Iconic Carte Blanche anchor and veteran journalist Derek Watts said his final farewell to the world on 22 August after his battle with skin cancer. The news of Derek’s death was confirmed by Netwerk 24 who received confirmation from Derek’s daughter Kirsten.

Eusebius McKaiser

Renowned analyst, broadcaster, and author Eusebius McKaiser’s sudden passing on 30 May shocked many in the world of journalism. Jackie Strydom, the manager of Eusebius, shared with TshisaLIVE that the analyst died as a result of a suspected epileptic seizure.

Costa Titch

Born Constantinos Tsobanoglou in Nelspruit, multi-award-winning rapper and dancer Costa Titch died on 11 March in front of a crowd at the ULTRA Music Festival in Nasrec, Johannesburg after he suddenly collapsed on stage.

AKA

A senseless death that shocked the nation, award-winning rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes was brutally murdered outside a Durban-based restaurant alongside his friend and celebrity chef, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, on 10 February. Police are still on the hunt for their killer.
