Leeroy Sidambe reportedly ordered to pay over R30-million in taxes

Businessman Leeroy Sidambe has found himself in trouble with the law again after it was reported that he owes a staggering R30-million to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

Local publication Sunday World reports that SARS applied for judgment against Leeroy (who runs a security company under his holding company Sakhile Ezweni Group) at the Joburg High Court last week as the businessman dodged tax obligations for about a year.

Court papers the above-mentioned publication has seen shows that Leeroy owes R24.5-million in unpaid personal tax. However, the total is over R30-million after SARS levied penalties to the debt.

A portion of a letter SARS sent to Leeroy on 17 October – before applying for judgment – read, “Overdue amount R29 955 350.74, latest account statement balance. You are requested to make full payment within 10 business days from the day of this letter of demand.”

The letter also threatened to attach and sell his assets if he failed to pay the full amount within those 10 business days, as well as sequestrate or liquidate him if he does not pay the sum owed, shares Sunday World.

“A civil judgment being entered against you in which case a warrant of execution may be issued for the sheriff of the court to attach and settle your assets,” the letter reportedly read.

Leeroy was also asked to apply for certain remedies within the same 10 business days – one of the remedies being applying for the suspension of the debt if he wanted to dispute it. Although, the taxman also warned Leeroy that failure to make full payment or use the recommended remedies will have them appointing a third party (someone who owes or holds money for him to settle the tax debt).
