FIFA bans Luis Rubiales after unsolicited kiss

Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has been handed a three-year ban from all football-related activity following investigations that found that he breached Article 13 of FIFA’s Disciplinary Code.

The article which deals with offensive behaviours and violations of the principles of fair play states that, anyone who violates the basic rules of decent conduct or uses a sporting event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature is subject to disciplinary.

The news of Luis’ ban comes after the infamous moment where he kissed Spanish player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s victory over England at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

According to Reuters, Luis was initially suspended for 90 days (about 3 months) following the non-consensual kiss. In addition, Sky Sports also reported that Luis resigned from his role as Spanish Federation President as well as UEFA vice president last month.

Meanwhile, he denies any wrongdoing and is allegedly planning to appeal the outcome.

In a recent statement issued by FIFA on Monday, the football association said: “Mr Rubiales has been notified of the terms of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s decision today.

The statement continued: “In accordance with the relevant provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, he has ten days in which to request a motivated decision, which, if requested, would subsequently be published on legal.fifa.com. The decision remains subject to a possible appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.”

“FIFA reiterates its absolute commitment to respecting and protecting the integrity of all people and ensuring that the basic rules of decent conduct are upheld,” the statement read.
