Bingeworthy series this Pride Month

The significance of this month serves to remind us of the bold and courageous participants who made history not just for our continent but for the queer community at large. The month of October marks the first Pride March which was held in Johannesburg in 1990.  

During this time, the state of our country was still under strict apartheid restrictions. This however did not stop the queer community from making this daring move. According to IOL, the participants took to the streets of Johannesburg while hiding their faces with masks and paper bags to protect their identity. Continuing the legacy of those who took a stand, the pride flag will continue being raised high with the intention that our country will prioritise the development and the protection of the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.

As we continue to celebrate this historic event, we have listed must watch queer series this Pride Month.  

  • Sex education 

This comedy sex drama makes a comeback for its fourth and last season on our screens. This Netflix series explores the lives and identities of students of Moordale Secondary as they embark on their coming-of-age phase in their young adult lives. The cast includes Asa Butterfield, Simon Ashley, Ncuti Gatwa and more. Viewers may anticipate a rollercoaster ride.

  • Everything Now  

This drama comedy series made its first debut on Netflix on 5 October 2023. According to Netflix, the first seasons follows 16-year-old Mia who suffered from an eating disorder. Post suffering from this eating disorder, Mila creates a bucket list that is filled with teen experiences she cannot wait to try out.

  • The Ultimatum: Queer Love  

This reality show focuses on couples who seem a bit skeptical of their future together. The show challenges couples and makes them step out of their comfort zones in a way they never anticipated. Will it end it in marriage, or will they walk away with a different story to tell?

  • Euphoria 

Starring Zendaya, the Showmax international series explores the life of 17-year-old Rue who is faced with a drug addiction. Upon returning from rehab, Rue steps back into her old habits and befriends the new girl in town. The Euphoria cast includes Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Stormie Reid, Hunter Schafer and many more.

  • Miseducation. 

This local series explores several aspects of the lives of university students. This captivating series entails a storyline of a transgender man and cisgender gay guy who somewhat develop feelings for one another. Netflix further shares that lead actress Buntu Petse embarks on a new life in a small town after the public humiliation she faced because of her prominent mother. Her character, Mbali arrives in Makhanda with the hopes of regaining her public status. Will she eventually be Makhanda’s coolest kid or not.
