The new change in season brings along unwanted, pesky guests, such as bugs and ants, who feel the need to make themselves comfortable in our homes. Luckily, there are ways to evict these visitors naturally.
Below are five ways to do just that by Farmer’s Almanac.
1. Diatomaceous earth
Use to get rid of: Cockroaches, fleas, and stinkbugs
Non-toxic to humans and pets, diatomaceous earth is a powder that eliminates bugs with an exoskeleton.
2. Eucalyptus
Use to get rid of: Mice
Add a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus essential oils to cotton balls and place them in a few areas around the house where the mouse has been hiding or eating. You can add the cotton balls in your car, cupboards, or near openings to the outside too.
3. Vinegar
Use to get rid of: Crawling bugs
Mix equal parts vinegar and water, and add the solution to a spray bottle and wipe down surfaces. This powerful disinfectant will surely keep the bugs away. You can also use the mixture as a repellent for fruit flies by simply putting cider vinegar and water in a small bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic and use a toothpick to poke a few small holes to trap the flies.
4. Cinnamon
Use to get rid of: Ants, mosquitoes, and moths
You can use cinnamon sticks, powder, or oil to get rid of the above-mentioned critters. With the sticks, place them in areas where you often find the insects, such as cupboards or drawers. With the powder, you can sprinkle it on windowsills and in doorways to stop insects from entering your home. Lastly, when using the oil, add a few drops to water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray anywhere you feel necessary.
5. Citrus
Use to get rid of: Spiders
Spiders do not like the smell of citrus. Instead of throwing away the citrus peels, use them to rub along windowsills and doorways. Another method to consider is soaking the peels in vinegar overnight and spraying the mixture where the insects are located.
