Things you shouldn’t do when wearing makeup

by Unathi Balele

Makeup is a powerful tool that can enhance your natural beauty and boost your confidence. However, when it comes to applying makeup, there are certain mistakes that many people make, unknowingly compromising their overall look.

Let us explore some things you shouldn’t do when wearing makeup to ensure that you achieve a flawless and polished appearance.

  • Sleeping with Makeup On: Leaving makeup on overnight is a cardinal sin for your skin. It can clog pores, lead to breakouts, and accelerate ageing. Always remove your makeup before going to bed to let your skin breathe and rejuvenate while you sleep.
  • Using the Wrong Foundation Shade: Choosing the wrong foundation shade is a common mistake that can make your face look mismatched or ashy. Always test the foundation on your jawline, and if possible, step outside to check it in natural light for the best match.
  • Overdrawn Eyebrows: Overly bold or overdrawn eyebrows can make your face appear unnatural and harsh. Instead, follow your natural eyebrow shape and use light, feathery strokes to fill in any sparse areas.
  • Ignoring the Neck Area: Failing to blend your foundation or face makeup down your neck can create an obvious line of demarcation between your face and neck. Make sure to blend your makeup evenly for a seamless transition.
  • Using Clumpy Mascara: Applying mascara in a hurry or using an old, clumpy mascara can lead to spidery lashes. Take your time when applying mascara, and if your mascara is past its prime, it’s better to replace it.
  • Skipping Primer: Primer is a vital step in creating a smooth canvas for your makeup. It helps to fill in pores, minimise fine lines, and extend the longevity of your makeup. Don’t skip this essential step!
  • Overdoing the Concealer: Applying too much concealer or using a shade that is too light can highlight imperfections instead of concealing them. Use a small amount of concealer and blend it well for a natural finish.
  • Using Unflattering Lip Liner: A harsh lip liner that contrasts too much with your lipstick can make your lips look uneven and unnatural. Opt for a lip liner that closely matches your natural lip color or the shade of your lipstick.
