Paris Fashion Week: Mrs SA 1st Princess Talitha Oosthuizen unveils Shweshwe handbag collection on runway

The women behind a collection of bespoke Shweshwe handbags are about to see their work travel far beyond South Africa, as Talitha Oosthuizen takes their creations to the Paris Fashion Week runway this week.

Made by South African women artisans through Bush Whisper Foundation, the collection blends the distinctive patterns and heritage of Shweshwe with contemporary handbag design, creating pieces that are proudly South African while designed for an international fashion audience.

Shweshwe hits Paris Fashion Week

For Oosthuizen, the significance lies not simply in appearing at Paris Fashion Week, but in whose hands created the pieces and the story those hands represent.

“I wanted to take something unmistakably South African to Paris,” says Oosthuizen. “These handbags carry our heritage, our creativity and the incredible skill of the women who made them.”

The collection was custom-made for the Paris showcase, with artisans turning their sewing skills into fashion pieces that will now be presented on an international stage.

“There are incredibly talented South African women creating beautiful products with their hands,” says Oosthuizen. “Taking their work to Paris is a privilege. This is about showing that South African craftsmanship belongs on the world stage.”

Taking Africa to the fashion world

The Paris opportunity came through Nadene of New Romantics Couture, with Oosthuizen working alongside the New Romantics team and Bush Whisper Apparel to conceptualise and create the bespoke collection.

The handbags are deliberately rooted in South African identity rather than designed to blend into the international fashion landscape.

“We have so much talent in South Africa,” says Oosthuizen. “We don’t have to leave our identity behind to be part of the international conversation. We can take our culture, our creativity and our South African pride with us.”

As First Princess Mrs South Africa, Oosthuizen says the collection allows her to represent a different side of South Africa internationally, one defined by creativity, heritage, entrepreneurship and the skills of its women.

The journey from South African sewing rooms to the Paris runway is ultimately a celebration of the women whose hands have brought the collection to life.
