Eating healthy while travelling is never easy as travelling comes with, well, eating.
It may seem tough to maintain a balanced diet while attempting to unwind and enjoy yourself. After all, you are on vacation and you want to (and deserve to) enjoy yourself.
That is definitely encouraged, but ideally, we can avoid having too many food regrets. In order to help you eat well when travelling, here are a few tips on how to eat healthy while travelling.
Stay hydrated
The most important thing about travelling is to always stay hydrated as you travel. It’s likely that you’ll be doing a lot of walking or touring, and hunger and thirst are frequent. Your energy levels will stay high and you won’t need to eat as often if you stay hydrated.
Pack in snacks
One of the biggest obstacles to eating healthily while travelling. In the opinion of certified dietitian and fitness coach Stephanie Hnatiuk, she told Foodsmart that it’s always best to have full control over when you eat. When it’s time to eat, hunger between meals can cause overeating.
She advises bringing snacks like whole or dried fruit, nuts and trail mix, pretzels or crackers with hummus or nut butter, or protein/granola bars to prevent this “hangry” feeling. Many businesses have tiny snack packs of nut butters, hummus, apple sauce, or other foods that don’t require refrigeration and are ideal for packing in a bag or suitcase, according to the expert. “I also enjoy eating roasted chickpeas or edamame as a salty, high-protein snack.”
Pack your daily vitamins
Keep your immune system up by not skipping your vitamins. This is particularly important if you’re not eating as much fruit and veggies as you normally would.
Eat loads of protein
When choosing a snack or meal, aim to choose something with a greater protein content because this, together with fibre from fruits and vegetables, keeps you fuller for longer and reduces your need for sweets. This is particularly crucial if you follow a plant-based diet because a lack of protein can also result in weariness and a weakened immune system, which are the last things you need while travelling.
