Tips to help manage your anger

Anger is a normal human reaction and feeling that has no plans to vanish. However, we can implement certain things that help manage this strong emotion.

According to WebMD, anger occurs when we feel annoyed, disappointed, frustrated or hurt, resulting from something that has either happened to us, something someone else has said or something that we remember.

Withholding anger can lead to passive-aggressive behaviour. For example, you may feel that you need to get back at someone for something they had done.

The publication also explains that suppressed anger can lead to anxiety and depression which may disrupt relationships or raise your chances of getting sick. Health problems may include high blood pressure, headaches and skin disorders.

WebMD provides a few tips on how to manage your anger.

  • Physical activity: Exercising regularly helps to improve your mood as well as releases tension and anger.
  • Talk to someone: Getting the necessary support and talking to someone will be of great benefit to you. The person can try to get you to work on changing your behaviour.
  • Laugh at yourself: This might not be some people’s go-to method. However,  try to laugh at yourself and see the humour in certain situations.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol: Avoiding these substances can assist in making you more able to handle your frustration.
  • Listen: Listening helps to improve communication and builds trust between people to avoid hostile situations. Instead of lashing out at someone, say, “Let me make sure I understand what you’re saying.” Then, restate back to them what you think their main message was.
