Foods that negatively affect your mood

by Unathi Balele

Certain foods can affect your mood negatively.

Research has shown that there is a complex relationship between what we eat and how we feel. Certain foods can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, followed by a crash, which can lead to feelings of fatigue, irritability, and mood swings. Others can lead to inflammation in the body, which has been linked to depression and anxiety.

According to Cleveland Clinic, consuming too much sugar, caffeine, and alcohol can negatively affect your mood. Fried and processed foods tend to be high in saturated and trans fats, which can lead to inflammation in the body, and potentially impact mood. Consuming fast food regularly can lead to a lack of nutrients and vitamins, which can cause mood swings.

In essence, certain foods can definitely negatively affect your mood in different ways. Here are some examples by EatWell:

  1. Sugar: Consuming too much sugar can cause a rapid spike in your blood sugar levels, followed by a crash, which can lead to feelings of fatigue, irritability, and mood swings.
  2. Caffeine: While caffeine can provide a temporary boost in energy and alertness, consuming too much can cause anxiety, jitters, and interfere with sleep, which can all negatively affect your mood.
  3. Alcohol: Although alcohol is a depressant, it may initially provide feelings of relaxation or euphoria. However, excessive consumption can lead to depressive symptoms and anxiety, worsen pre-existing mental health conditions and disrupt your sleep.
  4. Fried and processed foods: These foods tend to be high in saturated and trans fats, which can lead to inflammation in the body, and potentially impact mood.
  5. Fast food: Consuming fast food regularly can lead to a lack of nutrients and vitamins and can cause mood swings.
