Christmas lunch etiquette

Christmas is here and by now most of us know where we will be dining. Whether you’re the host or guest its important to brush up on your manners and lunch etiquette. We come from different cultures and have different traditions but manners are a universal language. If you’re a bit unsure on how to conduct yourself during the year long awaited occasion, this article is for you.

Do not be late

The time that the host has specified for guests to arrive should be observed. To give your hosts more time to handle any last-minute emergencies, try to arrive at least 10 minutes late.

Always bring a gift

Ask your host whether there is anything in particular you can bring. Christmas day normally requires an extra degree of catering and hospitality, along with the customary drink offerings of wine or a non-alcoholic substitute, you might choose to bring a gift for your host as a way to express your gratitude.

Mind your eating manners

At the dining table there usually is a lot of chatter and laughs as many have not seen each other in a while and are catching up, however its important to be mindful of not speaking with a mouth full of food and not covering up. Do not use the same spoon you’re eating with dish up for from the big bowls. Always clean up your mouth area.

Cellphones at the dining table

Everyone wants to snap their lunch spread and post on social media for their followers to see, however, you need to be mindful of elders at the table whom are not familiar with social media culture. If you really want to take the snap, ask, get it right the first time and be quick. As for constantly being on your phone and not paying attention to the conversations being had, that’s rude.

Christmas is the one day in the year where most families come together in large groups for a joyous occasion, take the time to soak in all the love and pay attention to your loved ones.
