Rapper Kuthulakwenkosi Siboto and songstress Yoza Mnyanda of the duo, Darkie Fiction, chat to our Features Writer Fundiswa Nkwanyana about their new EP titled Endaweni, and about what they’ve been up to during this lockdown.
Making music is our gift from God. When we were young, we fell in love with music and nothing else made more sense than music did. It gave us purpose and saved us in different ways. We both had solo careers when we met in 2016. In 2018 we worked together and released an EP called Sobabini: A Mzantsi Evolution.

Darkie Fiction tells the story of model C African children. When you listen to our music you will have a better understanding of what this means. We create music that young free African kids can relate to.
We recently released ‘Endaweni’, which is our first single and title track off our forthcoming EP. It’s a body of work that describes our personal journey from obscurity to new spiritual and creative heights. The song is nostalgic in tone and an expression of where we come from and where we are planning to go. It’s a song about how our faith in God and music turned us from nothing into something. It is a thank you prayer because our hearts are filled with gratitude.

We are using this time during lockdown to create and hone our craft. It’s a difficult time for us because tours and shows have been cancelled and we are not making money. However, we are focusing on the positive and creating music. We are also excited about the release of our full EP and we hope people will love it.
