No gym needed: Easy ways to add cardio to your weekly workout

Cardio does not have to mean spending hours on a treadmill or pushing yourself through exhausting workouts. Whether you are new to exercise or simply looking for an easier way to stay active, small, consistent changes can help make cardiovascular exercise a regular part of your week.

Cardio activities get your heart and breathing rate up and can support overall fitness, heart health, endurance and energy levels. The key is finding activities you enjoy and creating a routine that fits realistically into your lifestyle. According to GQ South Africa, these are some simple ways to get started.

Start with short workouts

You do not need to commit to a long workout to get moving. Start with 10 to 20 minutes and gradually increase the duration as your fitness improves. A brisk walk around your neighbourhood, a short cycling session or a quick dance workout at home can all count as cardio.

Starting small can also make exercise feel less intimidating and easier to maintain.

Schedule your workouts

Treat exercise like any other important appointment. Look at your week and choose a few realistic times for cardio. You might exercise before work, during your lunch break or in the early evening.

Listen to your body

Exercise should challenge you, but you should also give your body time to recover. Increase your workout duration or intensity gradually rather than trying to make major changes overnight.

Build a weekly routine

Consistency is more important than trying to do too much at once.

When you are a beginner, you might start with three cardio sessions a week, leaving rest or lighter-activity days between harder workouts. Over time, you can gradually increase the amount and intensity of your workouts.

Your routine could look as simple as:

  • Monday: 20-minute brisk walk
  • Wednesday: 20–30 minutes of cycling or dancing
  • Friday: 25-minute brisk walk or jog
  • Weekend: Optional hike, swim or recreational activity

The exact schedule is less important than choosing something you can realistically maintain.

Combine your cardio with everyday activities

You can increase your activity without setting aside a completely separate workout. Walk while taking phone calls, cycle to nearby destinations, do some household chores at a faster pace, or play active games with your children. These small bursts of movement can add up throughout the day.
